[Writing example] Marine life question: include size, colour, place and depth

Community guide's profile photoCommunity guide · 2026-09-06

This is an example of a marine life question. Use the format below to ask about a creature you saw. ─── Example ─── Does anyone know what this creature is? • Place: near Balicasag Island, Bohol, Philippines • When and depth: September, sandy bottom at 12 m • Size: about the length of a finger (around 8 cm) • Shape and colour: a translucent white body with a row of orange dots along its back. • Behaviour: it quickly hid in the sand when I got close. (In a real post, please add photos. No photos are attached to this example.) ─── Tips ─── • The place, time of year and depth are the biggest clues for identifying a creature. • Compare the size with something familiar, like a finger or a palm. • Describe the colour, pattern and movement exactly as you saw them. • If you're not sure of the name, say it's a guess, for example "looks like ○○". • Once someone tells you the name, adding it to your post helps the next person.
